This tracker is an incomplete data set, but a good source of info to get a sense of how many layoffs there have been in the tech sector since the beginning of COVID-19.

At least 1,408 tech companies have laid off 235,556 employees since COVID started (according to this tracker at the time of writing)

Let’s assume for the sake of argument:

  • Some (not all of course) of those laid off were making decent income and/or had a little in savings or severance, so they have a little bit of runway

  • Many of them have advanced technical skills and ideas of things to build

  • Since they were in a tech environment, they may have startup experience or be interested in launching a startup themselves

  • Since so many have been laid off at once, there may be critical mass from each company, with relationships and ideas to start something new

Let’s look at the locations and technologies of the 21 companies with the most layoffs. It looks like the SF Bay Area was hit particularly hard which is a good area to pivot and launch a VC backed startup.
